Spring Comes With Storms and Weather Hazards | SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul
The United States is a large territory, and having such a big space under one umbrella means that the spring season is different everywhere you go. We are second in size only to Russia and Canada, although China is larger if you don’t count all the United States’ outlying spaces.
In a nation this vast, different parts of the country experience a variety of weather threats over the timespan of a year. As spring approaches and warm and cold air mix together, let’s look at what kind of weather events each area can anticipate—and specifically, what we have to look forward to here in our Spring Valley neighborhoods.
In the Pacific Northwest, residents deal with heavy rain, which can cause flooding and water damage issues. Higher elevations are colder and could still have snow, which can cause damage of its own from melting and runoff.
The Upper Midwest and Northeast regions experience very different weather than us here in California. Winter’s chill hangs on there, with the temperatures often not warming until summer. Residents from Maine to the Dakotas can expect dangerously cold weather and the possibility of snowstorms and blizzards.
The middle of the country, including states from Iowa to Texas, can expect windstorms, derechos and the risk of wildfires, which are easily spread while the weather is dry and windy. These states often experience temperatures similar to our winter in the spring months. Much of the middle states also have a high concentration of tornadoes occurring, giving them the nickname Tornado Alley.
In the Southeast, residents can experience a variety of extreme weather, from tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the landlocked states to dangerous rip currents, plus early-season hurricanes in coastal regions. While spring in the south can feel a lot like home, the southern states still have to contend with cold temperatures and the occasional late frost.
While we can certainly relate to the rain, our Pacific Northwest neighbors experience in spring, the cold weather may sound foreign to us here on the West Coast. Spring in California can bring extreme heat that can be dangerous for both the home and life. Our quick warmup to summer-like temperatures also makes spring the rainy season for us in Jamul and Spring Valley. On top of the heat, the South Pacific, including Hawaii, will be on the lookout for the possibility of tsunamis and tectonic activity.
For most of us, spring in California is our favorite weather with mainly mild temperatures and sunshine. However, spring brings a unique variety of extreme weather no matter where you live. Regardless of what we or our neighbors face, it always pays to stay ready.
