Even in our mild climate, the arrival of spring is a highly anticipated time full of excitement. You can officially put away jackets and start planning for more time outside, but you should also begin to think about how to protect your home from the additional rain and severe weather warmer temperatures will bring.

When you spring-clean inside, start thinking about what you can do to start cleaning up outside as well. Start taking care of the most vulnerable places around your property to prevent water damage later.

Clean It Out

As we shake out the last of the chilly weather, it is crucial to address areas of your home that may have built-up debris. The increased amounts of rain we get over the winter can force leaves and other debris into piles in your gutters, which could lead to water on your roof and leaks in your attic.

You should also walk all of your property to check for other areas of buildup. Clean out anything that may be piled near your HVAC unit or dryer vents. This will not only protect your appliances, but it can also prevent fire hazards and water intrusions.

Check your outdoor faucets for drips or cracks as well. While frozen pipes are not usually an issue in our area, the lack of use and sudden drops can still lead to stress in your pipes. It only takes a tiny drip to become a big problem, so you want to keep a close eye on things.

Fix Issues Fast

While most of us spend plenty of time outside during the winter, chilly nights may still make it difficult to catch emerging problems around the outside of our homes, particularly on your roof.

Use our mild weather to take the time to get on your roof and check for missing or loose shingles. Visually check your gutters for any gaps that could lead to overflow.

As the weather changes and the wind picks up, a simple loose shingle can create a high leak issue. The faster you are able to correct problems, the more you can eliminate your risk of damages.

Get Ready for the Water

If you have a basement or crawl space with a sump pump, inspect it early in the season to ensure it is working correctly. Check for blocked lines or poor drainage. Your sump pump should be able to move water out of the lower level of your home just as quickly as it comes in, otherwise you are risking a flooded basement.

Check your emergency supply kit, and switch out any seasonal items for rain gear and fire safety items. Make sure you have two ways to receive weather alerts, including one that doesn’t require external power. Spring showers can become severe suddenly, so it is important that your whole family knows how to get to safety quickly.
