Wind can be a blessing, or a curse. On a hot day, a cool breeze whipping through your hair can help you catch your breath and feel like a gift, but when that breeze reaches intense strengths, it can end in complete chaos.
We may not be able to see the wind, but it is an ever-present part of our lives, even when we wish it wasn’t. Strong winds can turn your life upside down and leave your property in complete ruins.
Get to know the different kinds of winds that might affect your life so that you can be proactive in prevention and keep your family safe.
Most reports of wind damage are associated with thunderstorms, even more so than when a tornado blows through. While our weather in the part of California typically stays mild, we are not immune to the damaging effects strong thunderstorms can have.
Thunderstorms bring a lot of different threats, but it is not uncommon for winds to exceed 60 miles per hour when one blows through. Winds at this strength can blow debris around your yard and knock out the power.
Winds that are not associated with rotation are called straight-line winds and can be nearly 100 miles per hour. These wide-reaching strong winds can cause damage to places that didn’t even see a storm cloud.
Because of our location, we also experience dust clouds and coastal winds. Just last year we saw damaging winds called breaking waves when the sea breeze met the Santa Ana.
Tornadoes don’t frequently happen in our area, but when they do, they bring with them a wide variety of winds, including straight-line winds, downdrafts and bursts called micro- and macro-bursts. These winds combined leave behind a total path of destruction to anything they come across.
Some common kinds of wind damage include downed trees, damaged power lines and tossed round debris. When wind exceeds 80 miles per hour, it can quickly rip off roofs and knock over even anchored mobile homes.
In order to proactively prevent damages and keep your family safe, get to know the different weather alerts that might be issued when winds get high. Secure objects around the house that could catch flight when winds get high as well, including porch furniture and trash cans.
Trim your trees often, and have tall ones professionally maintained every five to 10 years in order to prevent potential falling limbs. Clear out loose limbs often, including after any storms.
Make sure you have an interior room with few windows where you can shelter if a warning is issued. If you don’t have protective shutters on your home, consider adding them for an additional layer of protection when the wind gets high.
After a wind event is over and it is safe to do so, walk your property to look for damage. If you spot anything, call SERVPRO right away. We can respond quickly and stop additional damages that could happen. It is our goal to get your home back together fast.
