Winter storms aren’t something we talk about often, but that doesn’t mean they can’t happen. Even with generally mild temperatures, our community can still see heavy rains, strong winds and bigger chills than we might feel prepared for.

That makes being prepared incredibly important. When you take the time to prepare your home and your family for anything, you can prevent potential damage and stay safe.

Preparing Your Home

When a storm is headed our way, it is crucial to gather your supplies. You want to have what you need before the worst of it hits in order to ensure you can stay off the roads. Heavy rain and chilly temps can result in messy and dangerous driving situations.

Make sure your weather radio is working well. Storms during the winter can quickly knock out power and keep it out long-term. Make sure you have a way to receive weather alerts, and get the rest of your emergency supplies out in order to make sure you are fully stocked.

In your kit, you should have flashlights, batteries and basic first-aid supplies. Make sure you have water and snacks, as well as some warm clothes and blankets. An alternate source of heat to keep you warm is a good idea as well—just be sure to follow safety guidelines on anything you use to prevent a different kind of disaster.

Think about where you might go if things get really cold and you need to leave home. Check with family and friends about their plans and check around the community for warming centers that may be opening.

Taking Care of Your Home After the Storm

Once the storm has moved through the area, spend some time inspecting your home for potential damage. Even if you don’t see anything wrong, there are few ways you can continue to keep everything safe.

Inspect your roof, especially if the winds were strong during the storm. Make sure there is no built-up debris in your gutters and check to ensure nothing has come apart throughout your gutter system. Leaves and tree limbs can block your gutters and leave your roof dealing with potential leaks.

Around the base of your home, make sure your downspouts are clear and water can run cleanly away. Add back any organic materials that washed out during the storm to keep a slope for water to run down. Clear out any other blockages around your HVAC unit or external vents to keep everything safe as well.
